Options for effective weight-loss

The best method for effective weight-loss is to cut the number of calories you are consuming and increasing the number of calories you are burning through some form of exercise or physical activity. Always remember that to lose 1 pound, you need to burn almost 3,500 calories. So how can you do it? By either checking on what or how much you are eating or by increasing your physical activity; rather, ideally, it should be a combination of both.

So imagine, if you are eating a dessert and consuming 500 extra calories daily for a week, then you would gain 1 pound of weight. Similarly, if you consume 500 lesser calories every day for one week or burn 500 calories each day with the help of exercising for a week, you would lose 1 pound. However, nowadays there are many weight-loss treatments other than exercising or dieting. Let’s see what those are.

Various Weight-loss treatments:

  • Heating eating plans and exercise regime
  • Lifestyle or habit changes
  • Weight management programs
  • Weight-loss medications
  • Weight-loss devices
  • Weight-loss or bariatric surgery

Weight-loss medicines

At times healthy eating and exercises are not enough, and hence, your doctor might advise some medication for weight-loss. However, you must still carry on with your healthy eating plans and do your regular physical activities along with taking weight-loss medicines. A word of caution here that you should never take any over-the-counter medicines or herbal remedies or any dietary supplements to lose weight without consulting a doctor as they may have harmful side effects.

Bariatric surgery: Weight-loss or bariatric surgery may include multiple types of surgeries that enable you to lose weight by making certain changes to the digestive system. You should consider surgery as an option only if you are facing extreme obesity and have failed to lose weight by other treatments. This surgery may be considered in case you have some serious health issues like type 2 diabetes or sleep apnea, which is related to obesity. Weight-loss surgery can help in improving various medical conditions that are associated with obesity, particularly type 2 diabetes.

Weight-loss surgery could help some people lose almost 35% or maybe more of their excess weight. However, it isn’t a miracle and doesn’t promise that you would lose all of your excess body weight and can maintain that in the long term. The success of bariatric surgery completely depends on how committed you are in making some lifestyle changes in your diet and physical activity.

Gastric bypass surgery: In this surgery (Roux-en-Y gastric bypass), the surgeon makes a small pouch on the top of your stomach. Then, the small intestine is cut at a small distance below the main stomach and is attached to the new pouch. This way, the food or liquids consumed flow directly from the pouch into this particular part of the intestine, taking a detour from most of your stomach.

Biliopancreatic diversion done with duodenal switch: In this surgery, the surgeon removes a large part of your stomach. He leaves the valve that sends food to your small intestine and the first portion of your small intestine called the duodenum. Then he closes off the middle part of the intestine and joins the last part to the duodenum directly. Now, the separated portion of your intestine is re-joined to the end of your intestine to let bile and other digestive juices flow inside this part of your intestine.

Gastric sleeve. In this surgery, a portion of the stomach is removed to create a smaller pool for food. It’s a comparatively lesser complicated surgery than biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch or gastric bypass.

Adjustable gastric banding: In this surgery, the stomach is divided into two pouches that have an inflatable band. By pulling the band tightly like a belt, the surgeon makes a tiny channel between these two pouches. This band enables the opening from expanding and is designed to stay in place for a lifetime.

Other weight-loss treatments

Another treatment for obesity and weight-loss is vagal nerve blockade. In this procedure, a device is implanted under your abdomen’s skin. This device sends occasional electrical pulses to the abdominal vagus nerve, which sends a signal to your brain when your stomach feels empty or is full. This new technology got FDA approval in 2014 and can be used by adults who have been unable to lose weight through some weight-loss program and have a BMI of 35 – 45 with some obesity-related ailment like type 2 diabetes.

PCOS and weight gain

Though there are several medicines advised for PCOS like birth-control pills, anti-androgen medicines, and Metformin (Glucophage), the anti-androgen medicines may block the male hormone effects. Metformin is actually a diabetes medicine that helps your body to use insulin more efficiently, while reducing testosterone production. Now, recent research has established that it can also help women who are overweight and have PCOS to lose their weight.

Along with medication, one must adopt healthy eating habits to keep your weight in control.

  • Diet should be high-fiber and low on sugar. Consume more fruits and vegetables and add whole grains. Do not eat processed or fatty foods so that your blood sugar levels are kept in check.
  • Consume four to six small portions or meals throughout the day and avoid taking three large meals. This helps in controlling your blood sugar levels.
  • Do some physical activity or exercise for at least 30 minutes every, or at least 5 days of the week.
  • Consult a doctor to check your cholesterol and blood pressure (BP) levels.
  • Quit smoking and alcohol.
